Victoria, BC – Canadian Sport Institute Pacific (CSI Pacific) is proud to recognize CSI Pacific-registered athlete Erin Attwell, who was one of four Junior Women named by Cycling Canada for the 2016 Road Cycling World Championships in Doha, Qatar from October 9-16.
A native of Victoria, Attwell’s cycling career hit new highs in the last six months on both the track and road. In April at the 2016 Canadian Junior Track Championships in Milton, Ontario, Attwell set three Canadian records while winning two gold and three silver medals. The 16 year-old also became the national junior road champion in June, winning the Junior Women’s race at the 2016 Global Relay Canadian Road Championships in Ottawa.
The Road Cycling World Championships will be Attwell’s second world championship this year. She also raced for Canada at the Junior Track World Championships in Aigle, Switzerland in July.
Attwell is a product of CSI Pacific’s Cycling NextGen and Canadian Sport School Victoria programs.
Cycling NextGen supports Cycling Canada’s high performance development system in BC to ensure athletes and coaches are being trained to standards required to win Olympic, Paralympic and World Championship medals. Athletes are provided with support to further their athletic goals, including sport-specific coaching, sport specific facility access, and sport medicine and sport science services.
“Erin’s success this year on the road and track is a direct result of her dedication to consistency throughout the past year,” said Cycling NextGen Coach Jeff Ain. “She has a great support network through Canadian Sport School as well as Cycling NextGen here in Victoria, and we are excited to see her represent Canada on the world stage again this year, and for years to come.”
The Canadian Sport School Victoria helps to alleviate the pressures experienced by high performance secondary school athletes and ensure that future Olympians, Paralympians and National Team members have all the skills and resources needed to continue to progress as high performance athletes, while excelling both on the playing field and in the classroom.
“Erin is an extremely hard working and dedicated individual who has excelled at balancing a rigorous athletic and academic schedule over the past year. She has an extensive travel schedule, but still manages to stay on top of her academics,” noted Canadian Sport School Victoria Coach Jenn Joyce. “All of her hard work has certainly paid off this year as she continues to move the bar for herself. We are looking forward to continuing to support Erin in her coming grade 12 year.”
CSI Pacific would also like to congratulate and acknowledge the tremendous work of cycling development coach Lister Farrar and Tripleshot Cycling for their role in fostering the development of Erin Attwell prior to joining Cycling NextGen and Canadian Sport School Victoria in September 2015.
Canada’s Junior Women will go to Belgium on September 21 for a preparation camp and from there fly directly to Qatar. Attwell will be one of two Canadian cyclists to take part in the road race and time trial.
